A Team report – Winter Mixed League

We took part in the top division this year, and we played a total of six games.

We had a very good start with two wins and a draw but then we lost two matches and finished with a draw against David Lloyd.

We were very lucky with the weather (although very cold at times) and my thanks to all who played, the standard is getting more difficult as more teams join the mixed leagues, so we have done well to maintain a mid-table position.

Social Summer Montage

social-2015-montage SHLTC have had a busy summer of social events beginning with a triathlon event which included open day tennis, rounders and a pub quiz. We then went to the cricket to watch our local Hampshire team in an entertaining T20 match. This summer also saw the return of the friendly matches with late summer evenings of tennis complete with delicious baked goods! We will say goodbye to the summer with an “International night” where you bring food from your local area, your signature dish or just a dish of your choice. We will also be having Christmas get together and will be emailing details soon, hope to see you there.

Family Coaching 2015

Following on from previous successful family coaching courses, we will again be running 6 week course to give children and their parents an introduction to tennis in a fun and friendly environment. The sessions will be lead by qualified coach David Macnab.

The course will begin on Sunday 17th May 2014, and will last for 6 weeks. Each session will start at 11am and last for 1 hour.

The cost is £2.00 per adult and £1 per child under 16, per session, which we think is an absolute bargain for an hour’s coaching. Please tell your friends and colleagues about this excellent way to have fun with their family while encouraging a healthy lifestyle.

Friendly Fixtures 2015

Not long to go till the start of a new, sunny (hopefully!), summer season at South Hants!

I am currently in the process of organising some Friday evening friendly matches (both on home turf and away) with other local tennis clubs, as in the past this has provided a brilliant opportunity for anybody who wishes to get a bit more match-play in, but who may not be regularly playing for the Teams.

It also maximises those wonderfully light summer evenings, is a perfect way to unwind after a long week, and not to mention the superb post-tennis teas we’ve had in the past… 🙂

If you are interested in playing in any of the matches please have a read through the dates below and contact myself directly and I can pop your name down to play. Matches usually kick off around 6pm and we aim to get x2-3 mixed pairs. If it is an away match and I’m playing too then I am quite happy to do lifts.

  • Friday 8th May – Compton (Away)
  • Friday 5th June – Swaythling (Home)
  • Friday 10th July – Compton (Home)
  • Friday 24th July– Clergy (Home)
  • Tuesday 11th August – Swaythling (Away) (Swaythling can only offer a Tuesday)

Club Tournament Finals 2014

The prizes the finalists were playing for.

The prizes the finalists were playing for.

Saturday 19th July saw the South Hants Lawn Tennis Club tournament reach it’s climax with Finals Day! This year, the finals were brought forward into the middle of the summer (rather than in September), and it resulted in a good turn out and a fun day.

The weather forecast predicted rain all day, but all we got was a short downfall early in the morning, which dried out before the first matches were played. All matches were played out in beautiful sunshine, while spectators snacked on cake and tea 🙂

The results from Saturday’s finals are as follows:

Ladies’ Singles

Ladies’ Winter League

Division 2

There are those who think that tennis is all about winning. And there are those who think that it’s all about running around, having a laugh and then eating a nice lunch. Those in the second group had a great winter season. In our six matches over six months, all 12 uninjured female club members played least once, which must in itself constitute a success. Playing tennis outside in the winter always brings a lovely sense of freshness and freedom – except for the two matches where it was a little too fresh and the rain predictably wet. But that meant we cunningly moved them to two gloriously sunny weekends in March, when all you wanted to do was get outside and escape from your kids (or maybe that’s just me). In terms of running, laughing and eating, we undoubtedly triumphed. Those mean enough to glance at the scores would note five losses out of six – but the victory, it was magnificent – epic poems will be told of it in years to come, handed down from generation to generation.

This year’s organisation was a truly egalitarian affair. The “captaincy” was split between three of us (Jenny Harding, Caroline Gamble and myself) and the need for any effort was further reduced by all our lady members being wonderfully responsive. Many thanks to all, both for replying and playing! I hope you’re not too bothered by the minimal results, but that instead, the few games have kept the coals glowing, ready to burst into a fiery enthusiasm at our opening weekend. See you there for the start.
