In case you needed your appetite for the grass court season whetting, here is a photo of our freshly cut courts! Don’t they look marvellous? Many thanks as always to our groundsman, Geoff Prince, for keeping them in such pristine condition – next time you see him, why not tell him how great they look, I’m sure he’d appreciate it 🙂

||Mix In – Late Summer
We’ve had a good opening first season in the new Mixed League and have thoroughly enjoyed the format. All our matches have been friendly and enjoyable, played in the usual mixture of rain, hail, wind and sun. In this division we played each team twice, which seems to have made it more intriguing and quite competitive for the second match! Also the ‘championship tie-break’ decider has been quite nailbiting at times! Fortunately, we seem to have secured enough points to move up a division next year, as with one match remaining we have won 3, drawn 1 and lost 1.
Many thanks to everyone who has played in the team.
All matches played away as usual and while it was the winter league the first two matches in October felt warmer than the summer !
- Romsey and Abbey :- Lost 5 to 4 very close and hot
- Knightwood :- Won 7 to 2
- Totton and Eling :- Drew 4.5 to 4.5
- Thornden :- Won 5.5 to 3.5
- Wellow :- Won 5 to 4 what a win !
- Bassett :- w/o
A big thank you to the 9 players of many nationalities who supported the club , what colourful conversations! ( Italian, Polish, Mexican, Spanish, Dutch and a resident Scot )
Summary – won 3, drew 1, lost 1, w/o 1
This should mean promotion to Div 5 as runners up!
We took part in the top division this year, and we played a total of six games.
We had a very good start with two wins and a draw but then we lost two matches and finished with a draw against David Lloyd.
We were very lucky with the weather (although very cold at times) and my thanks to all who played, the standard is getting more difficult as more teams join the mixed leagues, so we have done well to maintain a mid-table position.
SHLTC have had a busy summer of social events beginning with a triathlon event which included open day tennis, rounders and a pub quiz. We then went to the cricket to watch our local Hampshire team in an entertaining T20 match. This summer also saw the return of the friendly matches with late summer evenings of tennis complete with delicious baked goods! We will say goodbye to the summer with an “International night” where you bring food from your local area, your signature dish or just a dish of your choice. We will also be having Christmas get together and will be emailing details soon, hope to see you there.
Following on from previous successful family coaching courses, we will again be running 6 week course to give children and their parents an introduction to tennis in a fun and friendly environment. The sessions will be lead by qualified coach David Macnab.
The course will begin on Sunday 17th May 2014, and will last for 6 weeks. Each session will start at 11am and last for 1 hour.
The cost is £2.00 per adult and £1 per child under 16, per session, which we think is an absolute bargain for an hour’s coaching. Please tell your friends and colleagues about this excellent way to have fun with their family while encouraging a healthy lifestyle.
Not long to go till the start of a new, sunny (hopefully!), summer season at South Hants!
I am currently in the process of organising some Friday evening friendly matches (both on home turf and away) with other local tennis clubs, as in the past this has provided a brilliant opportunity for anybody who wishes to get a bit more match-play in, but who may not be regularly playing for the Teams.
It also maximises those wonderfully light summer evenings, is a perfect way to unwind after a long week, and not to mention the superb post-tennis teas we’ve had in the past… 🙂
If you are interested in playing in any of the matches please have a read through the dates below and contact myself directly and I can pop your name down to play. Matches usually kick off around 6pm and we aim to get x2-3 mixed pairs. If it is an away match and I’m playing too then I am quite happy to do lifts.
- Friday 8th May – Compton (Away)
- Friday 5th June – Swaythling (Home)
- Friday 10th July – Compton (Home)
- Friday 24th July– Clergy (Home)
- Tuesday 11th August – Swaythling (Away) (Swaythling can only offer a Tuesday)
The fixtures for the summer season are listed below. Please let your team captain know your availability as soon as possible! If you haven’t played for a team recently or at all, please speak to one of the captains or committee members about taking part.
