Family Coaching 2014

Following on from previous successful family coaching courses, we will again be running 6 week course to give kids and their parents an introduction to tennis in a fun and friendly environment. The sessions will be lead by qualified coach David Macnab.

The course will begin on Sunday 11th May 2014, and will last for 6 weeks. Each session will start at 11am and last for 1 hour.

The cost is £1.50 per person per session, which we think is an absolute bargain for an hour’s coaching. Please tell your friends and colleagues about this excellent way to have fun with their family while encouraging a healthy lifestyle.

Men’s Winter League

 Division 5

The campaign started off on a rather wet note as the first match against Compton had to be abandoned after an hour’s play, and rearranged.

The next match against Totton ‘B’ was also played between heavy downpours but we managed to play to a finish, unfortunately losing 3 – 6.

This was followed by another defeat against Thornden ‘C’ by 3.5 – 5.5.

We finally achieved a victory against Bassett ‘D’ by 6.5 – 2.5.

The next match against Wellow ‘B’ proved crucial as a win (or as it turned out, a draw) would have ensured finishing outside the bottom two teams. Unfortunately, we narrowly lost 4 – 5.

A win in the next match against Compton ‘B’ would have still left us with a chance of avoiding a bottom two place. Once again this was a very tight game eventually finishing in a 4.5 – 4.5 draw.

This left the proverbial ‘mountain to climb’ as the last match of the season was against the Division winners Wellow ‘A’ and we were well beaten 1 – 8.

Unfortunately this left us finishing the season 6th of the 7 teams.

Many thanks to all who played during the season.

Club Tournament 2014

The Club Tournament finals will be held on the weekend of 19-20th July 2014.

You may notice that this is significantly earlier than previous seasons (normally September). This was decided at the AGM, to try encourage more people to take part.

There are two consequences of this:

  1. Tournament matches will have to start earlier than usual. Therefore we will be asking people to sign up to enter the tournament over the Opening Weekend and the following week, and announcing the draw soon after. Please sign up promptly if you wish to take part!
  2. It will be the first drawn player/team’s responsibility to ensure the match is organised and played on time. Please ensure this happens, so other players/teams are not waiting to play.

The club tournament is excellent fun and accessible for any standards. It is a chance to play good tennis in a friendly environment, and will give you a slightly different experience to a mix-in.

Winter Mixed League Report

The mixed league was new for the season of 2013/2014 and we had a very successful campaign.

There were wins against Portswood, Glebians, Totton and Eling and a draw against Lymington. The only two losses were against Jem Tennis in Hamble and David Lloyd.

However, it looks like we might progress to the top division next season. Everyone enjoyed playing two mixed doubles with a Championship Tie-Breaker to decide the match if it was one set all. My thanks to all who participated and I think more clubs will want to sign up next season for the mixed doubles winter format.

Wednesday Intermediate Coaching

The Wednesday evening coaching sessions will start again (weather permitting) on
Wednesday 21st May 7pm-8pm. The sessions will run through until the end of July.

Cost is £3.50 per person or £4.00 for non members, please feel free to come along, all the basic shots are covered as well as looking at doubles tactics. I look forward to seeing you there.

Chair’s Report

Welcome everyone! Here’s hoping for some lovely summer weather with some long warm evenings and what could be better than having a game of tennis on the grass.

Let’s hope the worst of the wet is behind us and that we can enjoy another successful season. We hope to provide something for everyone again this year, with adult coaching, family coaching etc and we have brought the club tournament forward so that we can get as many people to play in it as possible.

There has been a small increase in membership fees and we are still looking for ways to fund the second part of the fence repair.

Please do your best to help out the Club teams by letting the team captains know when you can play.

So we look forward to seeing you again in April either at the cleaning day or over the opening weekend.

Family Coaching 2013

Following on from the success of our new family coaching in 2012, we launched a second summer of affordable tennis coaching for families.

Family Coaching 2012 - Action

Coach David Macnab led kids of all ages and their parents in games to improve hand-eye co-ordination and fitness. Set to a motivating soundtrack, these Sunday morning sessions attracted a healthy audience of existing members and non-members. With the help of startup funding from the LTA last year, we are able to offer these sessions for only £1 per player per week!

Given the popularity of these coaching sessions and the potential to introduce youngsters to the sport, we will certainly be running these again next summer.

Winter 2013 Socials

To keep in touch over the winter months, when it’s too dark and wet to play grass court tennis, we organise some social events for members.
